Cheers to our unsung heroes

L

ike a bird needs wings to fly, we need other people’s company to feel alive. The past year has proven to be a challenging one: many social gatherings were cancelled and holiday plans had to be put on hold. The first time you find yourself in a bar or restaurant again, make sure to raise your glass to the person on the other side of the bar.

What better day to start celebrating these unsung heroes than on World Bartender Day? On 24 February, we give praise where praise is due by turning our attention to those who serve us. For two years now, bartenders have had to deal with the unpredictability of the pandemic: bars closed, opened, closed again — a seemingly endless cycle that caused a lot of stress and uncertainty.

Over the years, we have spoken to many men, and one woman, who take bartending to a different level by approaching it like the craft it is. All of them manage to turn their extensive knowledge of spirits into cocktails that awe their guests and make them come back for more. Tess, Timo, Jonatan, Martin, Sandro, Ben, Yossi, Eddy and all the other marvellous mixologists: this one’s for you.

2022 will be the year that going to a bar or restaurant won’t feel like an exotic adventure anymore. When you’re out on the town, treat your favourite bartender to generous tips and kind words. Make your appreciation felt, and they will do the same. Isn’t that what it’s all about, having a good time together?
