The Beginning: Réunion

The story of Sir Edmond Gin does not begin in Amsterdam, but on Réunion: a volcanic island between Madagascar and the rest of the world, and the global capital of Bourbon Vanilla. It was on this island that Edmond Albius, the man after whom the brand is named, grew up.

Albius was just twelve years old and worked as a plantation labourer whe, in 1841, he discovered a technique for hand-pollinating vanilla orchids. Without this breakthrough, large-scale vanilla cultivation would never have been possible. More than a century and a half later, his method is still used today. It is exactly this kind of unexpected, unconventional breakthrough that lies at the heart of the brand story: someone who did not followw the rules and, in doing so, created something truly unique.

The Flamingo as a Character

Réunion is also home to flamingos. The brand uses this bird to give personality to Edmond Albius - and, by extension, to the brand itself. Throughout the brand story, the flamingo is portrayed as a migratory bird that stands apart from the rest: it does things differently, travels while others stay put and naturally stands out without trying.

These qualitites perfectly reflect the way Sir Edmond Gin positions itself: as 'a rebellious spirit with an unusual characer' - a distincive gin that breaks away from the traditional juniper-led profile by giving vanilla the leading role.

Why the Flamingo works as a symbol

For the brand, the flamingo serves several purposes at once:

  • Origin - It refers directly to Réunion, the birthplace of both Edmond Albius and Bourbon vanilla.

  • Character - As a migratory bird that is different from the rest is, represents the rebelliouis, unconventional identity the brand embraces.

  • Travel & Freedom - The flamingo travels across the world, reflecting the brand's international identity the brand embraces.

  • Visual Recognition - Its vibrant pink color and playful appearance mae it a distinctive and memorable brand icon that translates effortlessly into merchandise, packaging and social media content.

In short, the flamingo is far more than a randomly chose mascot: it is a symbol that embodies the very origins and identity of Sir Edmond Gin.
